4 Boat Marina Safety Tips

Boat Marina

Boat marina safety is critical for yourself, your guests, and anyone else who may be using the space. Here are a few tips to always remember.

As important as safety may be when you’re on your vessel, it’s also incredibly important that you follow basic safety when docking at a marina. Boat owners can end up spending quite a bit of time at a marina, so knowing all the ins-and-outs can go along way in keeping yourself as well as any guests you may have safe. Read on for four boat marina safety tips from us here at Tidewater Yacht Service.

1. Don’t Swim in the Marina’s Water

Docks and boats typically carry sources of electricity, and while this may not impose a big threat to other boats, bad wiring or damaged cords could cause parts of the water to be dangerous. You can reduce this risk by having your boat regularly inspected by an electrician and learning the basics of your electrical system. Consider installing an ABYC required ELCI if your boat doesn’t have one already. Regardless of how much electrical prep work you invest in, you should never swim in a marina as it can result in electric shock drowning.

2. Dock Safety

When on a dock, and around the entire marina, it’s important to wear non-slip shoes to prevent any accidents. Be sure to keep the dock clear of any items that could be a tripping hazard. Check to see where marina safety equipment is located, including life rings, ladders, or fire extinguishers.

3. Wear a Floatation Device

To be extra-careful, children should wear floating devices at all times, just in case anything were to go wrong. However, everyone should be wearing a PFD under certain conditions. This includes when boating at night, in congested waterways, if you’re boating alone, or during any inclement weather.

4. Take Note of Fire Hazards

The best way to prevent fires on your boat is to be proactive about the maintenance of your boat and follow the guidelines for safely refueling. Don’t grill onboard when at a marina, take it on land.
