4 Basic Boat Maintenance Tips That Shouldn’t Be Neglected

Boat Maintenance

Regular boat maintenance isn’t as difficult or intimidating as many people seem to think, but there are some tips to keep in mind.

For all the love we give to our boats, it’s an unfortunate truth that sometimes regular maintenance falls to the wayside in favor of prioritizing having fun with your boat. Like most things worth enjoying, there’s some effort that goes into owning a boat and properly caring for it is a necessity in keeping yourself sailing. For those who are completely new to owning a boat, it’s critical that you familiarize yourself with these basic boat maintenance tips and routines.

1. Changing Oil

You should familiarize yourself with how often your boat needs to be oiled. This varies depending on the model and engine type of your engine, so it’s always a good idea to discuss how often this needs to be done with your dealer or a professional maintenance expert. While changing oil is a pretty simple process that’s worth familiarizing yourself with, you can always get help from an expert if needed.

2. Keep Your Boat Clean

Keeping your boat clean is a part of boat maintenance as well, and just because your boat is in water all day doesn’t mean it can’t benefit from some basic washing. This is especially important when you boat in salt water, as salt residue can lead to corrosion. It’s not all too difficult, either—once you notice grime building up, take to it with a brush and some appropriate soap.

3. Checking Propellers

Remembering to check your propellers at regular intervals is essential for staying on the water without problems. Problems happen and sometimes, fishing line or other debris may get caught around the shaft which can lead to much more extensive damage if left undetected. If there is any noticeable damage, it’s important to get it repaired immediately by a professional.

4. Taking Care of Your Engine

Keep an eye on your engine. Needing to be towed back to the marina because of engine failure is never a good way to spend your leisure time, so begin with the basics. Look for any fuel or oil leaks and if there’s anything that stands out, contact a professional. Hoses and lines are a common problem area as well so be on the lookout for wear and tear.
