“In the fall of 1997, our 46′ ketch struck a tugboat near Philadelphia, PA, Due to an autopilot malfunction. The bow area of the hull and deck, including the fiberglass, the teak deck, the rigging, windlass, bow rollers, and deck fittings, was seriously damaged. We managed to get back to our dock on the Delaware River under our own power.
Tidewater Yacht Service was one of three Mid Atlantic area boatyards considered for the repairs. Their written proposal was prompt, clear, complete, and competitive. With the approval of our insurance company, we picked Tidewater as our repair yard.
The Tidewater people came to Philadelphia promptly, made our boat sea worthy, and delivered her to Baltimore for repairs. Once in Baltimore, her masts and rigging were removed and stored, and she was placed in a building for repair. Our boat is a Venus 46. Only 15 were built. They found another boat like ours, made measurements and models, removed the damaged portion of the bow, and replaced the forward 3′ of our hull and deck, including a new stem. Working with Bob Brandon, I requested certain modifications and improvements to the bow area, some of which was within the limits of the insurance work, and some of which was beyond the insurance work. Bob was reasonable and fair in deciding what was within the claim and what was additional work scope. The bow area repair work was done to very high standards. It is utterly impossible to tell that the work was ever done, except from inside the chain locker, where certain of the modifications I requested can be seen as not original. The insurance company had so much confidence in Tidewater that they paid us the full amount of the estimated cost of repairs shortly after the boat arrived at Tidewater. When the actual cost of repairs exceeded the original estimate, they increased the claim amount and paid the difference promptly, based on Tidewater’s explanations.
In addition to the insurance claim and other work at the bow, we decided To perform a major refit of our boat. As a result, she was at Tidewater’s facility for over 18 months.
We relaunched in the summer of 1999. Since February 2001, we have cruised in Kindred Spirit full time. During the past 11 years, we have sailed over 30,000 nautical miles, much of it offshore. We have cruised the entire
East coast of North America, the eastern and western Caribbean, portions of South America, have transited the Panama Canal and crossed the Pacific Ocean beyond Tahiti. We are still cruising. Tidewater’s work on our bow has held up perfectly during all this use. I am convinced the bow is stronger now than when our boat was new.
We highly recommend Tidewater Yacht Service, and Bob Brandon. He is knowledgeable, sincere, and honest.”

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the folks at Tidewater Yacht Service for the outstanding job they did in repairing our boat. Caught in last year’s Derecho (June 30, 2012) our GB-42 sustained around $30K worth of damage. Not ever having experienced such a huge loss left us wondering how, and where, we could have the repair work done. Friends of ours, who had suffered significant damage to their boat, recommended Tidewater having had the repair work done there with complete satisfaction. Our friends told us that, after working with the folks at Tidewater, they wouldn’t ever consider having anyone else work on their boat. That was enough of an endorsement for us! Our friends were not only extremely pleased with the repair work, but even more so with the friendly personal service they received at Tidewater. Based on their recommendation, we contacted Tidewater and made arrangements for the repair work to be done. We soon met Brett Steinmiller who became our Service Manager, and I have to say that working with Brett has been a real pleasure. I explained up front that we needed to control our costs since the insurance company was only covering a portion of the work that we were planning to have done. Brett and I communicated regularly about remaining work and $$$ left in our “boat fund.” In the end, we got our boat back fully repaired (with some new additions) at a cost that matched our budget perfectly. The work was superb, and quite frankly, we could not be happier. We have already made plans to return to Tidewater this Fall for our Winter storage and to have a additional work done (after we replenish the “boat fund”) prior to our departure on the Great Loop next Spring. Our experiences were all good! The marina is clean and the people who work there are bot friendly and knowledgeable. Having had major work performed with complete satisfaction is about the best anyone can ever hope for. If your boat needs repair, we highly recommend Tidewater Yacht Service Center in Baltimore, MD
